Hey Listers -

I just acquired an Apple eMate 300, in like-new condition, surplus (well, more like dumpster-diving) from my place of work this summer.

I got just the Newt and the Stylus. It looks good enough to run, though.

And sure enough, it does! I saw that the Newt was rated for 7.5v, 1.2A, so I plugged in a 7.5v, 600mA switchable multi-adapter I have, and was able to get the eMate's charge light to come on, and, if I press the power key, I will get the startup noise (on Macs, it's a bong...this is a chime?) and the dark screen with the Newton logo, etc. comes on, but that's all - the screen blanks out after that. I'm assuming that's because it doesn't have enough power to run properly.

So, I'm letting the battery charge, and after a while (longer than normal, I'd guess, assuming the battery is even good) I'll give it another try, unplugged.

I was considering doing a battery rebuild with some nice modern NIMH cells - just have to get the right Torx bit to get that back cover off.

Also, looking through the translucent back cover, I noticed two low- profile slots, much like the RAM slot in my iBook, both of which, however, are empty. Is this normal? What goes in there?

TIA,

Jordan
