Obviously, I have not brought across the main message: This is not at all about desktop use! I thought the pointer to the diskless technologies origins was an entertaining side note, but no-one would be interested in reviving this technology for thin clients. Nonono.
I am using this technology to centralise installation and management of server farms. It's in production at the company I work for five years now. Most web sites the company that I work for hosts are running on "diskless" Servers (which are in fact not diskless, but rather use local disks for swap, local database, tmp, logfiles etc). The point is that this technology is so much associated with desktop use and, like I said, almost abandoned by Sun, that I feel I could help to promote and revive an almost forgotten technology with some interesting use cases.
