I think this is a good approach (since the groups are moderated anyone in
there has passed *some* minimum barrier of course) but I wonder about some
of the logistics:

   - how would a user account on one or more of the discussion lists get
'translated' to the wiki? (e.g., would this be a 'manual' process or is
there some way to automate it that I'm not aware of?)
   - would we immediately/proactively attempt to 'migrate' or 'import'
existing discussion group accounts over to the wiki or would we envision a
more as-needed approach (such as on-request, etc.)?
   - would the user group be flooded with distracting "please create an
account for me on the wiki" -type postings?
   - would we want to set up some place on the wiki where ppl could request
accounts and then wiki-managers would verify their request against the users
on the discussion lists and then create their corresponding wiki account?

I agree that the 'has a viable account on one of the discussion groups' is a
pretty good minimum req'ment for getting contrib rights on the wiki.
