My buddy has an old Yamaha RD400 that did this one morning. He turned the
key on and the bike just started right up without him having to kick it
first. He shrugged and went back inside while it warmed up. A few minutes
later he came out and went to take off, but went backwards. All he had to do
was kill it and kick it to go forwards again. Our nighthawks being 4stroke
would have something terribly wrong with them if they were running
backwards.
