Did you know that tire failure is the most common
form of breakdown any motorcyclist will experience? Unfortunately, many riders
don't pay nearly enough attention to their tires, neglecting what is probably
the most important part of any bike. Proper tire inflation and maintenance will
not only make for a much more enjoyable ride, it can quite literally safeguard
your life. On top of that, it's just about the easiest bit of bike maintenance
you can do!
Some things to remember: An under-inflated tire
will generate more heat than normal, leading to decreased tire life, poor
handling and possible tire failure. An over-inflated tire will create an overly
stiff ride and be more likely to be cut or punctured. Try to do a quick visual
check of your tires before any ride. Look for any embedded items that may have
punctured the tire wall. If you find anything, remove and repair/replace the
tire immediately. Always keep a quality tire gauge around. The pen-type gauges
are fine for your on-bike tool kits, but a quality digital or dial-type gauge
will often be more accurate and should be part of any motorcyclist's garage.
Check tire pressures early and often!! Always remember to check tire pressures
when the tires are cold, and to inflate to the bike manufacturer's recommended
air pressures for your particular make and model. Do not use the tire pressures
listed on your tire's sidewalls. These are usually maximum pressures allowable
for that tire.
