Hey fellas, it's been a while since I read or posted to the group but
now I find myself in need of some advice.

I own a 1984 700cc. Its glory days are long in the past and it has
been abused a good bit, but not by me. I acquired it less than a year
ago, promptly fixed up the wiring, replaced light bulbs, changed the
oil, and loved it.

Last weekend, I was riding and blew out both of the connections from
the body to the oil cooler - a bit surprising but I was not moving at
speed so no injuries. I've ordered replacement parts, and this is a
very straightforward problem - I can see exactly what the issue is,
and I have the tools to fix it.

However, this morning I awoke to discover that somebody had tried to
steal the bike out of my apartment's parking lot. The worst damage is
to the ignition cylinder and instrument panel trim, and it's
significant enough that I can't insert the key. The forks are stuck
in the locked position because that's how I park it. For some reason
the would-be thieves opted for my weathered bike instead of the shiny
late-model CBR next to it. Sadly for them the bike was
non-operational due to the oil cooler issue.

I would like some help exploring my options for handling the ignition
cylinder issue. Money is a little tight right now. I'm going to call
the insurance company and see what they say, but I don't expect too
much help. How difficult is it to replace the ignition, if I can find
a replacement? How difficult or safe would it be to bypass the
ignition with some kind of switch or button? Is there anybody in the
San Francisco bay area who has the suitable skills and is inclined to
help?

Much appreciated,
Matt Born
