When I lived in NYC, I lane split all the time. It makes absolute
sense to be able to use all the mobility advantages a motorcycle
allows, and it made my bike the only way I could get around town
efficiently and still preserve my desire for individual transport.
As to safety, that's largely in the hands of you, the rider. If you're
alert, and do it with fingers hovering over the clutch and brake,
chances are you'll be just fine. Yes, the occasional moron will try to
cut you off, but that doesn't happen enough, IMO, to sit and stew in
traffic when there's a way out. As for car doors opening, I never
split between the moving and parked lanes and wouldn't advise it.
Splitting is illegal in NYC, but I never got bothered, even when cops
watched me. Maybe they were envious.
