No, that's another story altogether. The small displacement multi's were still
part of the racing program. The opposed four / six came much later as they
invested heavily in the large touring market.

Yeah - like the 50cc six cylinder engineering exercise, a machine that
sorta lead to the big six opposed cruiser...

Pedestrian motorcycles for the street were of no interest to Honda. The racing
programs at MV Agusta and such did... Stuff we never saw here. Honda's street
bikes are a "trickle down" from development projects. To justify expenses, they
produce a marketable version. All the inline fours have Italian heritage. The
V-twins however, come from a marketing request. For awhile we thought that
Honda was headed in the right direction with the 600 v-twin Hawk. Maybe, just
maybe a Ducati inspiration ? What a neat little bike ! Fetch big bucks around
here. The "Barbie-ceptor" definitely made us think Ducati. A 250 v-twin with a
fairing ? Then there was that pastel color thing to consider.

In Arizona back then, there weren't any Italian twins, just Triumphs; so the
resemblance, which was not accurate with regards to the Triumph and puzzled me
somewhat, now I understand...
I do remember a Ducati single, but it was just a half a Honda engine..And
that's just in retrospect here...

There was a vertical twin 650 Yamaha that was almost a clone of a Triumph.
Early Honda's are mostly based on Italian designs. All the way up to and
including the first 750/4. Other noteworthy attempts at cloning those sorts can
be found in the Kawasaki twins W1 and W2.

I was not referring to the top speed:  in circuit races, the Norton wasn't as
fast as the Triumph, but handled better.  An experienced rider could beat a
Trump because of the handling.
Straightaway, yes, the Trump was faster.  But we're talking back when Norton
was a 500cc, and Triumph - well, I don't remember exactly the displacement, but
I think it was 650.  It didn't have the handling of the Norton back then.
The new ones built since the "re-birth" handle better and have fewer problems
with the electrics.  If you recall, the workers, after they out-priced the bike
with the amount they extracted in labor, tried to make a go of it, and still
could not, so there were no more Triumphs for a good while.  Norton, on the
other hand, never came back.
I used to wonder about the resemblance of early twin Hondas to Triumph...

Really? I never heard of a Norton Bonneville. Condensed history of the Triumph
Bonneveille: September 1955: Johnny Allen sets the record with a two-way
average speed of 193.3 MPH. September 1956: Johnny Allen takes back the record
with a two way average speed of 214.17 (and NOT from a norton). 1962: Bill
Johnson sets a record with a two way average speed of 230.269 MPH. 1966: Bob
Leppan sets a record with a two way average speed of 245.66 MPH (albeit he used
two 650 Bonneville engines to accomplish this). For the next few years Triumph
fitted the Bonneville Roadsters with "World's Fastest Motorcycle" stickers. I
love a good debate...send me something....I know you will ;)

The Bonneville 650 may have been fast, but the Norton handled much better and
could beat it in races.  Some of them liked to put a 650 engine in a Norton
frame over there for the races...

Gee, are cables for that still available ? I haven't checked in a long time.
Scuffing on the jackets is not a problem. There is a really neat method used by
the English to lube cables. I can write it out if you want to know.

hello group....and happy new year to all of you...

just wanted to update you on my carb cleaning project...almost
finished and ready to reinstall...need to get them in before mlk day
(jan.18) because i go back to being a full time student on the
nineteenth...so with that said...

as of today I have them set out in an upright position with a fuel
supply, checking for leaks...as suggested by Dennis....

internally, i have done all the necessary cleaning, unclogging and
deglazing and they are looking pretty sparkly and shiny...on the
inside....

the external housing is a different matter though...there are a lot of
little crooks and crevices that I just can't get to to degrime....I am
planning on using compressed air, engine degreaser, pressurized water,
and wd-40 to try to take care of the external cleaning...HOWEVER...

I read somewhere on the web, that soaking the carbs in
 boiling lemon
water for about 20 minutes would externally clean them right
up....so...what do y'all think....would y'all recommend this method or
not....would/could anything get damaged by this method?

second, I was setting the carb assembly upright to check for leaks and
kinda noticed that the throttle cables are a bit on the worn
side...looks like they're the originals from back in 1984...so should/
can I go ahead and replace them or just give them a good cable
cleaning/lubricating?

any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated....thanks guys!
