G'day Nighthawk Lovers, Here in Virginia, I took advantage of the only 'got up to 50 degrees' day lately to do a mid-winter run on my (new to me) parts bike, a 1984 CB-650SC (just one year off my main ride....). Got it this past fall, and its only problem in fall was dirty carbs, which Seafoam seemed to deal with adequately, and I replaced the battery with an AGM. Cosmetically, some issues and I'm holding up on a seat refurbishment til I know and trust this 2nd bike. I only did a few hundred miles before putting her away for the winter (intent....ride every few weeks on the warnest weekend day).
Anyways, looking for some advice from the more mechanically inclined amongst us. She started right up after many weeks, and all seemed fine after the typical long warmup in colder weather. Nuetral, 1st gear, 2nd gear, I'm feeling good. Then, can't get her to shift to 3rd gear...I run at medium high revs a while, try various ways, no go. I go about a mile, and maybe she's warming up...does shift into 3rd. But now she can only shift between 2nd and 3rd, no getting to 1st or below. I do a four mile ride to stable, do my work there, start her up in 2nd with clutch, do an anemic 2nd gear start up and ride 4 miles back home, still stuck with only 2nd and 3rd gear. So, I haven't put her back in her shed, to look her over tomorrow in the light. Here's the question..... 1. what could be wrong 2. what should I check and try, in what order I've got my ideas, but I'm hoping for some of you more knowledgable than me....I never ran into this in my string of four Hondas over forty years, and I did a lot more cycle work when I was in my twenties than I do now in my fifties. Thanks in advance, Mike Vienna VA 1985 CB-650SC 1984 CB-650SC
