All joking a side, if you're heading to Oahu give me a heads up, depending on what the quiver looks like I may have a bike for people to ride. At the rate things are growing I may have a hard time riding all my bikes enough - even in Hawaii. Topic: So I hear you like pictures Stumpi <sandisc...@gmail.com> Jun 21 09:59AM -0700 ^ I figured since I've been trolling around here for a while I'd make a formal introduction. My name is Matt, I've been riding for about 4 months now. I've been a backyard wrench turner since puberty and finally decided to get into motorcycling. I bought an '82 CB450SC in December for $950 and spent the rest of the slushy Ohio winter undoing the previous modifications and doing some of my own as well as getting a bent valve replaced. I would've talked him down but I didn't know about the valve til we got it home and did a leak down test; that and I was kind of excited. :) I also got most of a '79 CM400A thrown in for free. I've been riding it pretty much every dry day since February and I tweak something on it just as often. The carbs have been cleaned and I run a slightly modified #4 washer mod along with two idle mixture thumb screws. Other than a stuck air valve, which is getting replaced shortly, it's running great and has been a wonderful first bike. I haven't started my car in 2 weeks :D My two major complaints are that 6th gear is far too tall for it and the seat is a leather wrapped brick. The first I'm addressing by dropping from the stock 17\36 to a 15\34. Should let it turn about 400RPM faster at 70mph and give it a little more torque to work with. One of these days I'm going to reshape the foam seat but not quite ready yet. Without further ado, the promised pictures. http://16481440758028870596-a-g.googlegroups.com/web/450+R.jpg?gda=0bjTajsAAAD2Sv5c1zlIsiHNALM79dzcNWOZFKd40lV5GGbxwDH4KIdo9lEdL8NBsn-H9zrZv-MGRdr3QrylPkw2aRbXD_gF http://16481440758028870596-a-g.googlegroups.com/web/450+F.jpg?gda=SdnNrzsAAAD2Sv5c1zlIsiHNALM79dzcNWOZFKd40lV5GGbxwDH4KIR3gyj_ax2glrxl3EGHm7gGRdr3QrylPkw2aRbXD_gF http://16481440758028870596-a-g.googlegroups.com/web/Fool+_+Bike.jpg?gda=gjdmL0EAAAD2Sv5c1zlIsiHNALM79dzcztVc_NjOdfjZQkBqUHHen-R6_cT6G33vEguQapNmWP9TCT_pCLcFTwcI3Sro5jAzlXFeCn-cdYleF-vtiGpWAA By the way how does one imbed pictures in your posts here? Joey Kelley <sandp...@gmail.com> Jun 21 01:03PM -0400 ^ Welcome Matt! Geez that bike looks awfully familiar to me....... Kinda like I just got back from lunch on one....... -Joey 82 CB450SC Joey Kelley <sandp...@gmail.com> Jun 21 01:05PM -0400 ^ Oh - One other thing - did you do a Gas Mileage before and after on your #4 washer mod? Been thinking about doing it to mine and wondering about the consequences. Maybe I have different expectations but for some reason I've never felt the need to alter the bikes gearing - I guess its because I stay off the highway as a general rule and try to do most of my riding on two lane blacktops at 55 MPH.... -Joey Stumpi <sandisc...@gmail.com> Jun 21 11:20AM -0700 ^ Part of my reasoning here it that if I get a varying head wind and I'm in 6th I've got the vary the throttle between 1\4 and very nearly 1\2 just to keep pace at 65+. In 5th under the same conditions I don't need any conscious throttle inputs to maintain speed but I'm turning nearly 6 grand. At 50-55mph in 5th the bike is beautiful, plenty of ooph left and she cruises the twisties wonderfully. I didn't do a mileage test before the mod but I did one the other night on the super slab in prep for the new sprockets. I got 53mpg at 65mph constant, and 57mpg at 55mph constant both in 6th. That was with a marginal northerly wind (road was east-west) and about 70F. This jives with what I've seen other people report for it so I don't think mileage is robbed much. paul annen <greenzer...@gmail.com> Jun 21 06:18PM -0400 ^ great looking bike, and looks like you have a decent shop there too... i bet you could put at least a dozen hawks in there (not counting the stacking in the loft for parts bikes).... keep the rubber side down yeti Allen Thomas <althomas...@gmail.com> Jun 21 09:17PM -0400 ^ Be glad you have a 6th gear, I'm forever looking for one on my 92 NH. -- Sent from my mobile device Javier Garcia <jajgar...@gmail.com> Jun 21 09:38PM -0400 ^ So do I!!! does not feel like it needs one more gear? I'm pretty sure gasoline eats it. Just make sure that the plastic screen that goes inside the tank hasn't dry rotted. It's about the size of a lipstick maybe? The "reserve tank" straw goes up inside it. The plastic becomes brittle after a while and may break or the screen can get fouled. The rest is just obvious stuff, make sure the threads are clean both inside the tank and on the petcock. The cars around us all slammed on there brakes. I think it caused more problems then it solved. If you find an after market horn that sounds more like a motorcycle horn but loader I'd be interested. Confusion when I use my horn seams like it could be more dangerous then one that isn't load enough. My two cents. Joey Kelley <sandp...@gmail.com> Jun 21 03:59PM -0400 ^ So I was thinking something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Locomotive-Train-Air-Horns-Complete-152-db-System-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1e5c31135dQQitemZ130395738973QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories I suppose I could put the tank on the rear of the luggage rack and strap it down. One horn could go on each of the front forks. Course I'd have to rebuild them to support the weight. Overall - doable. Maybe a second battery with a solar powered charging system to handle the strain. Its a thought. -Joey PS - If you believed any of this I have some wonderful ocean view property in Oklahoma I'd love to sell you....... Allen Thomas <althomas...@gmail.com> Jun 21 09:10PM -0400 ^ Making cars slam on their brakes is exactly the situation I want to happen when ever I need to use my horn.
