I'm not sure how interchangeable the 550 stuff is with the 650 and 700s but I would look into it. I'd keep an eye on eBay and see if there are any salvage yards within a hundred miles of you. I do occasionally see entire rebuilt carbs on eBay for a couple hundred $. Again, those are usually for 650s and 700s but something worth watching. I just don't think any sort of patch job on that diaphragm will be flexible enough or reliable enough for it to work.
