Hi all,
I am a dirt rider by nature, but have always wanted my own
streetbike. My Dad has owned CB750s,900s, Goldwings, and now has a
Valkyrie.
I recently purchased my first streetbike project, an 84 Nighthawk S in
pieces. It has sat in a garage for 15 years after someone put 40K miles
on it in 7 years. The last inspection date was 1991....
Fortunately all the pieces have been garage kept. The bike was purchased
from a dealership under mechanics lien for $800 in 1995.
It ran rough, and the owner I purchased it from never bothered cleaning
the carbs and parked it.
He currently owns a Hyosung and a Buell, so....that goes w/o saying he's
a bit of an odd bike owner...
Someone drained and took the carbs and the fuel tank off but they sat on
a shelf untouched for 15 years.
The tank has no dents but some rust inside since it has been empty. The
right side cover is missing, and the seat cover is aftermarket
draw-string type.
The fairing has some scratches from someone laying the bike down on the
left side and a small crack. There is a little rash on the engine fins
and stator cover. Otherwise the bike is in great shape.
SO needless to say, I was taking on a decent amount of work. I have read
on here about using heat to install the carbs and boots. THANKS!!!
I did a quick clean on the carbs, checked the diaphragms for tears, and
took all the jets out. I neglected to remove and clean the chokes...
Within 2 days and 4 hours of work I have now got it to start and run!
I am currently using a dirtbike gas tank with a manual petcock. I
believe this is causing problems because I am getting problems
With fuel in the crankcase and in the aircleaner.
After I POR15 treat the tank and check/install/rebuild the petcock I am
hoping this problem goes away. I bought another set of carbs used (from
a running bike part-out) just to have some insurance.
Anyhow, I look forward to being a member of the group. Thanks in advance
for all the research and trial and error here. It really has helped
already!
