I just had a Kawasaki KZ1000 do that. gas would pour out through the hole in the muffler because it was being sucked into #3 cylinder due to a torn diaphragm in the pet cock (allowing gas to be sucked into #3 intake). Graham

diaphragm in the petcock could allow fuel to pass it and drain straight down the vacuum line directly into the #2 intake runner, bypassing the carb all together. this would fill the cylinder, and fuel would eventually drain past the rings into the crank case. If you started the bike in this condition it could hydrolock the engine. Even a little gas in the oil will destroy its
viscosity, and prematurely wear the bearings and transmission gears>>

This is exactly what happened to my bike, including the hydrolock, which thankfully seems to have done no damage. Other symptoms were fuel leaks when hot, flooding on start, and even fuel starvation at high speeds. And it ALL was caused by a 1/16 inch diameter hole in the center of the petcock diaphragm. We replaced the petcock with one off Ebay and not only did all the trouble vanish, but fuel economy went from 40 MPG to 50 MPG.

Check the petcock first.
