Synthetic refers to the substance being constructed in a laboratory - vs. coming from the ground. Silicone is a specific chemical known to coat some surfaces and produce unsatisfactory performance in systems not designed for its use. Silicone is a synthetic, but not all synthetics contain Silicone. -Joey
