Thanks! I'll try some Honda brand MC oil first before I tear into the
clutch. Bob

Joey's probably on the right track. If you've put standard auto oil in the
bike that's why your clutch is slipping. You need one without the friction
modifiers. An oil change is a much easier job than tearing apart the clutch.

Here's the complete story. Noticed a clutch slip in third gear a few days
ago after the bike had been run and then sat for an hour or so. Went for
an inspection yesterday[passed] then to the PO. Came out from PO, started
bike, and engaged 1st gear. Let out clutch lever and the bike clutch
appeared to slipping so badly that the bike could barely move, [the engine
revving up with clutch lever released and in any gear]. The Honda service
manual trouble shooting guide suggests causes as: 1. Hydraulic system
sticking 2. Discs worn, 3. springs weak. There does not appear to be any
adjustment for the hydraulic clutch throw distance. Using a Walmart brand
10w40 non synthetic in engine/gearbox right now..[the manual says to use
10w-40 SE or SF]. Not sure what the specs were on the oil I have in there,
but will be changing the oil anyway, so will make sure I am using the right
spec oil. Will drain oil today and take the clutch discs apart for
measurement/inspection.also will measure the springs for proper length.
More to follow.. Thanks to everyone for their help

Bob,

Hydraulic clutch? What symptoms are telling you the clutch went out, as it
may be a simpler solution than tearing down the pack.

Well, got the bike inspected today, and the clutch went out on the way home.
Will be tearing it apart tomorrow. Anyone have experience with 83-84
Nighthawk clutches? I'm guessing I'll need springs and plates. Any problem
using full synthetic after the clutch rebuild [I have some on hand, so
thought I'd use it up]?

Well, I got the bike back together after moving the engine out of an '83 550
sc frame and mounting it in an '84 650sc frame. Used a mix of parts from
both bikes to make one.

Runs well. Clutch seems to slip under hard acceleration in 3rd gear. I also
noticed that the clutch lever has to only be barely squeezed to get the
clutch disengaged [i.e. No free play at all]. Anyone have any experience
with these clutches? Any adjustments? Suggestions? Thanks!

PS: I have a bunch of spare parts if anyone needs them.
