Personally I clean my chain with kerosene and a tooth brush every 3K miles or so to get the old grime off. I have read that WD40 is bad though because it acts as a penetrant and goes past the o-rings to dissolve the grease inside the chain. Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

Ok, I just got a new Regina Z-Ring chain, and was looking online and stumbled across this: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84778 "Recently somebody told me that according to a chain article they read, WD was bad for the chain. proper O, X or W ring chain maintenance is NEVER scrub the chain becasue you will push the road grime past the oring into the heart of the chain, and dramaitcally shorten the chains life. Just lube the rollers on the sprocket teeth every few hundred miles with just enough lube to keep the parts from rustings. That's all you need to do (besides adjusting it)." Can this be right? I've been using a grime brush and a can of chain cleaner to clean my old O-Ring chain every 300-500 miles or so, then riding for a few minutes to warm the chain back up, then using PJ-1 Blue Label lube. Can I skip the cleaning part and just do the lube? Planning on doing a cross-country trip on my '92 with 70K miles on it, was curious if I can skip bringing the chain cleaner and grime brush and just rely on the lube. Anyone smarter than me know?
