Welcome aboard, here is my long list you may not want to do all of this but at
least make sure the bike's lights, brakes and tires are safe. Change oil and
filter, brake hoses, and tires unless they are newer than 3 years (they get
hard). Check and replace brake pads/shoes as needed. Check operation of clutch
slave, and replace clutch fluid. Check chain tension and condition (excessive
stretch, rusty or frozen links), check sprockets and if any part is worn
replace sprockets and chain as a set if ok lube chain. Check ground cables and
clean off any corrosion. Replace plugs, check air filter (mice like nesting in
airboxes). Check forks for leaky seals. Make sure all lighting works. Drain
tank and make sure there is no rust in the petcock screen. Replace fuel line
and vacuum hose to petcock. Lube the throttle cables. Check the charging system
by checking the voltage while running (14+ volts @ 5K RPM). That should cover
most issues with an old neglected bike.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] New to the bike!!

I'm 47 and I've never ridden a motorcycle. One month ago, I bought a
1983 Nighthawk 450 from a guy here at work for $600. Because it sat
for a couple of years, I'm having the carborator (sp) rebuilt.
Everything else is in great condition. I would take any suggestions
or ideas from anyone and everyone concerning this model. I also look
forward to meeting everyone in the group!
