I work for the state; I'm a librarian, actually.  I think it just
depends on your profession - typically the profession/professional
outlook will dictate if you can or cannot have tattoos.  As in your
case, I think you mentioned that you worked for the fire department,
while they may not allow tattoos or visible tattoos, that certainly
doesn't mean that there aren't office/professions/state agencies that
don't allow them; with most offices, it's a judgment call.

For the most part, there isn't near as much discrimination based on
ink, that said, were I to go on a job interview, I would absolutely
wear long sleeves.

When I took my motorcycle safety class, I was actually really
surprised that the class was comprised of primarily all women. I'm not
sure what I expected - maybe just a little more balance. I don't see
many women riding around here, but these days I'm paying a bit more
attention.
