Funny, I never read the manual.  It's just the manufacture's suggestion on
how to operate the vehicle!  :)

Some manuals do say "close", but should tell you which direction "close"
is.  Most likely, the direction to "close" the choke is really opening it.
And, yep, as Kyle says, the term "choke" may or may not refer to an actual
choke plate.  The act of enriching the fuel mixture is often referred to as
"closing the choke", even if there is no actual choke...
