Okay Gene, you're actually missing the end of the starter that actually fits into the engine. It's a bit tight to pull out/put in because of the O-ring on it. I bet you have four bolts you pulled off of it, two long ones and two short ones. The long ones hold the starter motor together, the short ones attach it to the crankcase. If you can, try to reattach the body of the starter motor you are holding in your hands back to the thing still in the crankcase with the two longer bolts, then pull the whole thing out again. It might be a bit difficult to get the gears to fit right, especially if they have already come out of position (they need to be positioned exactly right for the thing to fit together). If it won't fit back in, just pull out the part that is still stuck in the crankcase. There's a little gear that fits on the end of the starter motor called the pinion gear (?). Put that thing back together and you have your whole starter motor, which may or may not be functioning properly :P. Let us know how it turns out. Oh yeah, get a manual :P. Helps out bunches. Clymer's great for descriptions, Honda Service manual for Nighthawk 750 has great diagrams. And it's easier to look up torque values in it.
