make sure there is no gas mixed in with the oil in the crank case.

The valve cover is off because the previous owner was trying to find
the knocking sound he was hearing. I turned the engine over a couple
times when I got it home but I couldn't hear a knock anywhere for the
life of me. I'm thinking I'm going to get it back together and
sealed/
oiled up to see how the knock sounds (if there is one) while its
running. With just over 3,000 miles, I have a hard time believing
anything inside the engine is critically wrong - though it has been
sitting since 1991...

Looks like it is in real nice shape, why did you take the valve
cover off?

Hey all - sorry for my late response. I drove up to check the bike
out this past Sunday, and MAN was this guy a vintage collector. We
hooked up a new battery to crank it over so he could show me the
knock, but we heard nothing out of the ordinary. I took it off
of his
hands for the $350 regardless and brought it home. Thanks for
all of
your responses, it really made the difference in this transaction.
Here is a quick pic I snapped once I got it home. The mess
behind the
bike is getting cleaned before the bike is!
