True, but stainless will last forever.

Along those lines marine parts stores sell stainless cables that I once used
for a replacement choke cable for an ancient snapper riding mower. They
basically sell them by length too. You would never need to replace those.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] throttle cable

so yesterday was just a crappy day. i left my key on (after all the
discussion about using the kill switch) and drained my battery. after i got
a jump and back running i went to hit the gas and my throttle cable broke...
did you know that my local honda dealer says that they can not get me a
throttle cable for my 86 GL1200?? so i end up at the local bicycle shop who
hands me a single ended cable and a "cable knar"... this works out
perfectly, the cable is the same diameter and the end pieces are close
enough to work. after some other struggles like removing the section of
stuck broken cable from the center of the jacket (yes it broke in 2
places simultaneously) and re routing the cable, and needing the hands the
size of an infant to hook everything up... im back on the road and better
then ever...

lesson learned, replace your cables BEFORE they break and dont be close
minded when looking for hard to find parts. this bicycle cable should be a
permanent replacement. and even if it only lasts 10 years or 40,000 miles..
i will be happy with it.
