A couple of things.  I also live in Mpls and would be astounded if this was
true.  That would mean it all drained out during the winter.  I can get you
the name of a  "trusted" mechanic if you send an email to me directly.
So how does this work.  Bike working in Fall 2011, Winter 2012 no oil at
all, and no evidence of oil leak!
I did a lot of little things to my bike 82 450 SC and now the bike is
working good.  I think you could still do this, as long as you did not run
it out of oil.  The red light should come on, if you ran it out of oil.
