Use a known good battery (the one in your car would be good) and jumper cables.
Insure correct polarity hookup to prevent damage to your cycle. Leave the
ignition off, and be sure it is not in gear. Attach jumper cables to auto
battery. Hook the – (negative) jumper lead directly to the – battery post and
the + jumper lead directly to the + battery post. Attach the other end of the
– negative jumper cable to a good cycle engine ground: bolt, etc. Briefly
touch the free end of the + jumper cable directly to the starter motor + post
where the motorcycle cable attaches. If nothing happens suspect the starter
motor. If the engine cranks over (it will not start), suspect your cycle
battery or starter circuit.

With a volt meter + (plus) lead hooked directly to the battery + post and the –
(negative) lead hooked to a good engine ground observe the voltage present. A
good battery should have about 12 volts. With the starter button pressed there
should be somewhat less present, but still over 9 volts. If there is little or
no voltage drop when pressed, the starter motor/circuit is not using any
voltage/current and needs investigation. If you cannot maintain about 9 volts,
the battery is suspect. Repeat procedure with the + (plus) lead in contact
with the starter + terminal. If voltage drops below 9, it is the battery. If
the voltage is less than the previous test, suspect a bad connection in the
battery circuit. Volt meter is available from Harbor Freight tools for less
than $5.

Hope this helps. Ask if have question about this.

If you have a volt meter - see if you can determine if you do or do
not have power at the starter motor when the button is held in. If you
do, its in the starter motor or something is not right internally to
the engine. If you don't have power, work backwards until you find a
part of the circuit that does have power.
