I can't take all the credit for that, a little bird whispered that idea in my ear, but have you tested the coil you took off? It's possible it was just the connections that needed to be reseated and grounds that needed to be cleaned. Removing the old one and installing the new one would effectively do that so maybe the old coil might still be fine.
