Sealant on the spark plugs? I hope you used something that will let you get
them back out. Well did you try adjusting the clutch cable before pulling the
engine. Did it have the correct oil level, and was the oil fresh? Now that it
is apart just check your parts to make sure they are in spec, and be sure you
assemble it correctly. Sorry I can't offer more help, but these bikes don't
normally have transmission issues.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] HELP! Shifting Problems.

I got myself a 92 Nighthawk 750 last year. I rode this bike all year
throughout winter. It ran fine, no problems other than only doing 35mpg.
Since I'm pretty broke because I'm going to school and all, I decided to
fix the bike myself. For the most part I've done a decent job of keeping it
in good running condition. I even crashed it and fixed it back up. I
replaced the handlebars, cables and even got it back up to 40mpg by putting
sealant on the spark plugs.

My real problem started suddenly, I was on my way home when I suddenly
couldn't shift down. I had to stomp on the shift lever pretty hard for it
to engage to the lower gears. Shifting up has no problems whatsoever, it's
only shifting down that's the problem. Shifting down feels like a smooth
press, usually you feel a small resistance when you shift up or down. I
decided to take the bike apart, I figured that if I'm fixing the engine,
might as well fix everything else. It took a while but I cleaned up every
part of the bike and the engine is now in my room. I'm on my way painting
the engine since it looks like it's oxidizing or something. It gets pretty
cold in NY and I don't have a garage so I figured I could work on it here.

I finally have the engine apart and there seems to be no broken or damaged
shift fork, fork shaft, fork claw, gear shift spindle, drum shifter so I am
stumped. If any of you have suggestions on what could cause this problem,
please let me know and I will check it out.
BTW I have the manual and that's what I'm going by. Also, the bike was in
5th gear when I took the engine apart.

Thanks,
Jeff
