Agreed. I start my with no choke & let it futz until it quits. Then I close the
choke & start it again. I twist the throttle slightly so that the bike has a
fast idle, then I take off. I will open the choke part way after about 3-5
minutes. When the bike "feels" like it running good, I open the choke up all
the way.

Thank you,

Ross

That is normal behavior. Leave the choke partially on for a little while while
you're riding. If you turn out the fuel screws a bit then that will be
minimized to only cold days <60 degrees. Due to emissions rules these bikes are
set very lean from the factory.

Hi there, I'm from the UK and have an '85 CD250 (same engine) that has exactly
the same problem - i.e. warm it up, head off, it loses power when you put the
throttle on, then surges, then I'm up and running. Only ever happens in the
first minute or so. Once engine's been running it goes away. I can stop, do
some shopping, come back and it will be fine.

If you think your carbs are clean (I cleaned mine in an ultrasonic cleaner and
used a compressor to clean the tubes) I now believe my problem could be due to
the rubber connectors in the system - from the engine to the carbs and the
carbs to the airbox.

Have a look at the rubber itself, if its perished or degraded and if the
connection between the rubbers (in the airbox too) are rotten.

I'm planning on fitting cone filters just to see what happens, but it's more
complicated than I thought.

Just a thought.

From a cold start, I let the bike warm up for a few minutes. Then, when I take
off, after shifting into 2nd, when I roll on the throttle there is like a dead
zone where I get no acceleration; if I roll on a little bit more, then the bike
surges a bit. 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th, I don't seem to have this problem.
