My first bike was that 1983, and I can't seem to move on past that. It is
still my main motorcycle. It just so great, whereas my wife has had 4
others that I have had the pleasure of working on. (including a 1982 450
Custom which I guess was also named a NH at some point.)
I am saying this as encouragement. I feel your WTH in the middle of the
night, but there are most likely some things to be done to it. Did you say
how many miles are on this?
if you don't know the battery age that may be a good idea to replace it.
Yes, it will definitely kill the battery just sitting there at idle. You
must crank it above about 2500 RPM to be sure you are getting charged. The
choke is your friend for a couple minutes after starting, just to re-charge
a little.
Yes, make sure you have sufficient fluid levels in the battery (fill with
distilled H2O).
No, there is no interlock on the side-stand (thank God).
I will pay better attention to this thread to watch your progress.

You will love this bike.
