If the valve guides are worn this will also allow it to let oil in. Pull your
carbs and exhaust pipes and use a light to look inside ports. If the stems are
wet with oil you know it's coming from the top end.

gap in which side??????very important thingi.... Easy way to say

have been a long time watcher from the sidelines and have decided to step
across the lines and play along.

I have an 1983 650 nighthawk and bought bike in 2002 after previous owner had
let it sit in his shed for the last 8 years. I rode it for a couple of years
till my wife became pregnant, and put it away in my garage for a few more
years. Brought it out 3 years ago and started to fix things up. In the mean
time found this group and was able to glean lots of very informative stuff.
With all this new found confidence, I decided to undertake replacing the valve
seals as the bike was smoking a bit, and had been sitting idle for so many
years. The whole procedure was a slow process, but I was able to replace them,
reassembled everything and have it running again. But now it blows blue smoke
even worse than before. It appears to be coming out both sides equally. Did
clean up valves when I had them out, which was primarily wire brushing the
carbon off. Used a bit of gasket cleaner on block and this may have cleaned
the carbon off the top of cylinder wall allowing blowby. I have ridden it
about 150 km to see if it clears itself up. So, I am not quite sure where I
may have gone wrong.
