Six years ago I rode my Nighthawk 18 miles home in the dark. This led to my
finding this group.

Fast forward to today. Today I decided to get to the bottom of the problem.
It took all day, but I fixed it. If your headlight goes out on you, it may
be for the same reason.

Take a look at this little drawing. This is the condition of your starter
button when it is not pushed in. The contacts are above the button, so the
headlight contacts are engaged. When you push the button in, it disengages
the lights and engages the starter mechanically. The headlight circuit of
your bike runs through the headlight contacts.

In my case, once I got into the right handlebar pod, I could see that one
weld on one wire on the headlight contacts had come loose. It was
originally welded from above. This explains why the problem came and went -
gravity and bobbling. I soldered it back in place the best I could and
blobbed silicone caulk on top of it to keep it in place. It works, but I
don't know for how long.

At least now if my headlight goes out again, I'll know why. Prior to today,
it was a mystery to me. If yours goes out mysteriously, this could be the
reason.
