Not necessarily. A three pin side stand switch sends two different signals: up and down.
The light only cares about one of them: it's looking for the presence of the down signal, not the absence of the up signal. Found my problem, by the way. Half the switch is broken off. I have the down signal, but the ring that makes the UP contact is gone. Jumper took care of that.
