Hi everyone! I have a 1982 nighthawk 650 with a couple problems.
First things first the bike will start up just fine when cold with the choke, after warming for a couple minutes the choke can be turned off fully and the bike will idle great! The problem is that after riding for about 15 minutes (regardless of the speed or gear) the bike will start to bog down or maybe lose spark out of nowhere. If the clutch is pulled in at that time or the engine slows down past 4,000 RPMs the bike will stall out and then will not start until it is cooled for at least 5 minutes. The choke must be used also to get it going until it cools significantly. Then the same thing will happen 2 minutes later!! A buddy of mine said that the charger, stator or rectifier was shot. So I used a voltmeter on the batter and checked to see if it was getting a charge, which it was. At about 4,000 RPM the voltmeter read about 14 volts and didn't seem to rise any higher. Also the starter has always cranked normally after the bike dies, and the battery seems ok. I hooked up my multimeter to the charger and it read about 5.5 ohms. So i am lead to believe that the charging system up to the battery is ok. Am i correct in thinking this?? I haven't tested the coils or CDI box yet as i am not quite sure how.
