A thought:  When reinstalling the petcock after cleaning the tank/tube 
filter, it's critical to keep the mesh filter as straight as possible as 
you fit it into the tank.  This means holding the petcock body securely 
with one hand and oriented to its final position as you tighten the 
retaining nut with the other.

Otherwise, the flexible mesh can get twisted and tangled, reducing its 
ability to flow an adequate amount of fuel.  Especially critical as fuel is 
burned from the tank, so there's progressively less gravity forcing fuel 
thru the tube.

Dunno about the earlier bikes, but the later models have a second mesh 
filter in the petcock bowl which must be cleaned also.
