that makes sense
I had to buy this battery when I first got the bike 4 years ago and it was
a pain to track down the right model with the right posts.
getting something more commercially available sounds like a good upgrade,
though

Yeah, A battery goes stale (sulfates) if it isn't used frequently. The
charging/discharging keeps it alive. If it sits for too long it can't be
effectively desulfated ever again.

New one is in order.

You could invest into a lithium battery which seems to be better but I dont
know if they last longer but they seem to be a favorable choiceSent via the

battery for a nighthawk. Kind of a right of passage. There's an agm that I got
at walmart that is a few cm's off the correct dimension of the lead acid
correct size. It is a bit wide and sticks out of the battery box, but was a
good choice. Other than a few10 minute trickle charger sessions to top her off,
it's been a perfect battery. I brought the old batt there to side by side the
comparison. Once you have good volts, and you know your fuses are all good, you
can check all the connections. Polish them up with a wire brush to expose fresh
metal, and put dielectric grease where it need to be to protectkey places from
corrosion, which on these old bikes is a fact of life.Nothing you can't sort
out in an after noon with a pot of coffee nearby. Good luck!On Sat, Oct 17,

the battery isn’t reading any voltage.. I’m measuring post to post, correct?
There is some fluid surrounding the caps and some more that came out of the
overflow.. and oxidized my center stand a bit :-/ I can hear the fluid bubbling
inside the battery when I turn the key. All fuses in the box on the handlebars
look good but I didn’t try to pass any current through them. I couldn’t get any
reading off of them either. Is my battery dead? I’ve got more electrolyte fluid
and could try to refill it.On Monday, October 12, 2020 at 10:58:27 PM UTC-4

up shorting out the positive+negative posts on the battery. The trickle charger
that is in line now won't charge the battery (blinks red). There is enough juice
for the starter to turn over once or twice, so it's still outputting, but it's
also still dead. What did I break? Thanks

Oh yes, I use ethanol free in all my bikes as well and a dash of sea foam
in each 5 gallon can. Fortunately the e-free station is only about 6 or 7
miles away and I don’t ride much anyway - mostly test riding bikes, mine or
others and just keeping them running. Not sure of the results of e-free yet
and now I have a whole garage of different bikes than last year so it’s
hard to compare from one winter to the next. I now only have one Nighthawk
but 4 super magnas. I don’t know how they handle storage and not being
ridden, e-free vs non e-free, etc. So far I’m pretty impressed. My
Nighthawks (700S) has to be ridden more often and is more susceptible to
carb issues. That was true of most of my other Nighthawks over the years.

Graham,
thanks, ie: a 'maintainer'.
will look at going cheap, but not too cheap, don't want to wreck a good
battery that's only about a year old.

Thanks Drew, and Graham,
I will get E-free from now on.
Since I bought it, I have not turned off the fuel:
the prior owner said he re-built the petcock
(due to leaking?), and he told me he suggested just
leaving it "on", as he thought that the constant off/on cycling
would just wear it out faster; seemed reasonable to me, maybe I should
rethink that.
