Yes it is built by Canon and you can observe the brand name Canon looking into
the diaphragm blades of the lens!
Even the F5 is manufactured by Canon!
Getting serious, even if today all can be possible
the Canon and Nikon lenses are DIFFERENT in optical and mechanical
construction and focal length
so I'm thinking if your local dealer was a little drunk when he said this.
