Jeff, I recently had to find this out due to another problem. My top LCD will not go completely blank while batteries are in the camera. When I take the batteries out, the LED goes blank. When batteries are replaced in the camera, the underscore of the aperture and shutter speed illuminates as well as the perimeter of the AF area plus the frame count parentheses with the number or "E" showing. You can take the batteries out as many times as you like and the frame counter wil return to the correct position. Once I have this repaired; I'll follow up and report the whys and wherefores of this problem.
