The camera knows at what distance the lens is focus with D lenses
(that is its function).  It doesn't matter whether you manually
focused, AF'd, or didn't focus at all.  The lens basically tells
the camera, "The lens is focus at distance X."  AFAIK, every Nikkor
has a distance scale on the lens barrel.  To further demonstrate,
if you were to focus on something (manually or AF) without telling
me the subject then hand me your camera/lens without changing anything,
I could tell you the distance to the focal plane.  I would do this
by just looking at the distance scale.  That is basically all the
D lens does.
