Thanks for the alerting me to my bad answer, Steve!
Both the original question and my response refer to manual
focus only, not to manual exposure modes. The original
post did not state whether a manual focus lens was being
used or an AF lens or an AF-D lens. The question concerned
only 3D matrix mode and not simple matrix mode.
My response was ambiguous as I was thinking only of manual
focus lenses. With them, it is, indeed, true that
neither 3D matrix nor simple 8-segment matrix modes are
available. If you mount a manual focus lens, the N70 will
switch automatically to center-weight mode and both the matrix
mode and P icons in the LCD panel will blink to alert you
of the change.
When you switch an AF or AI-P lens to manual focus mode,
you do stay in the 8-segment matrix metering mode but you
loose the 3D feature. The matrix icon remains displayed in the
LCD as it is used for both 3D matrix and staight matrix modes.
If you switch an AF D lens to manual focus, you retain the
full 3D matrix mode of metering.
In summary: When using manual focus with the N70:
MF lens -- no 3D matrix, no matrix, only center=weighted or spot
AF lens -- no 3D matrix. Only matrix, center, or spot
AF lens -- 3D matrix, matrix, center or spot metering modes.
Sorry for the confusion!
