I remember reading that the value of lens coating was gradually
realized by photographers over time based upon a natural phenomenon: 
'Blooming' of micro-organisms across the glass surface of a lens, if
done just right, seemed to increase light transmission and reduce
flare.  After a while, certain vintage 'bloomed' lenses became
especially valued, until manufacturers were able to develop a
commerical process.  In other words, the value was discovered by
photographers, rather then being invented by a manufacturer.  Anyone
can verify this?
