If you're interest is simply to take quick pictures without having to worry
about figuring which lens to use, exposure, aperture, etc..., then a compact
with a fixed zoom-lens is probably fine. However, if you wish to have more
control over your pictures, and you want to have the ability to change
lenses for greater variety, something like the N60 (or whatever model suits
your needs the best) is the way to go.
Yes, it helps your pictures if you are a good photographer, but good or bad,
most serious hobbiests enjoy the versatility of a good SLR with
interchangeable lenses. I must admit, the clerk's statement leaves me a bit
baffled. He certainly isn't trying too hard to make a sale, is he?
