This is probably the most obvious and stupid question of the year.. but
here is goes anyway.

I have read a lot of posting in this list complaining about certain cameras
not having DOF preview (e.g. N60) and how that could be "bypassed" (turning
the lens to almost unmount it). 

I have a camera with the DOF preview, but other than darkening more (small
apertures) or less (big apertures) what it's in the viewfinder, it is not
obvious to me as to how to determine the effective DOF from what I see. 

I understand the concept of DOF, hyperfocal distances and how to calculate
them. The point is how do I take advantage of the preview. Is there
something wrong with my eyes that hinder me from seeing what is there?

If you feel answering this post will use bandwidth that could be used by
more Nikon specific issues, please answer to me directly.
