As to your questions about who really needs an AF-S 28-70 -- one word: hockey!

A friend on staff at the paper I work at swears by this lens for shooting
hockey and he won't shoot with anything else. As for the rest of us, I have
been waiting for the AF-S version since switching back and I'm going to buy
it as soon as my wallet allows. The difference for me is the smoothness of
the autofocus when I need to use it. Sure, I could buy the 35-70 (I used to
use one quite a bit) but the 28-70 is just a much better lens (I'm basing
this on the design and use of the Canon). I guess the difference comes down
to something like this: would you rather have a hammer or a pneumatic nail
gun? Both do the same thing but one can do it much faster and with less
stress and strain.
