Yes you are correct, both the camera and the lens must be set to manual for
manual focus and, the reverse is true both camera and lens must be set to
auto for auto focus to work. Not a good design, but it is the only major
flaw in an otherwise excellant lens.

Question about the 300 F4. I am using an F70 with this lens. Am I correct
that in order to use this lens on manual, BOTH the camera AND lens have to
be switched to M?
