They wouldn't have needed to be photographers
before NASA got 'em. If NASA want's a good
photographer, they've got the resources to make
one.
They just give a group the equivalent of a year
of college courses in 3 days, then stick them in
EVA suits and make them wander around in the desert
taking pictures of rocks for a day or so. Whoever
makes the best big rock picture -- as determined
by an elite panel of world-renowned big rock picture
experts becomes an officially qualified NASA
photographer.
Congratulations Bubba, you get to touch the camera
now. Maybe we'll even let you fly someday.
Astronauts tend to be highly motivated to master
new skills quickly.
