        I think Nikon's marketing department would take exception to that.

        Why do you own Nikon?  Surely it's not just to pay more money
        for a lens that is made by Tamron?  In part, I own Nikon because
        of the lenses -- because I can expect consistancy from Nikkor
        to Nikkor in terms of colour and contrast.

        When Nikon writes in their product catalog that they "built our
        own glassworks to produce high quality glass for Nikkor lenses,"
        and that ED glass is "a Nikon innovation," heck, I believe them.
        And that means I believe the Nikkor 70-300 is Nikon's glass.

        Now, the one thing that hasn't been proposed is that the Tamron
        lens has Nikon glass!  ... possible?  Maybe.
