I'm an amateur without much experience, but I have the Sigma
70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO macro lens and I love it. I find it every
bit as sharp as, say, the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D for 4x6 prints.
It also seems to give nice warm colours.
On the down side, the zoom ring on mine is a tad tight but it
doesn't cause me any problems.
I also find the macro quality good (for 4x6 prints) -- you get
1:2 at 300mm.
I haven't enlarged bigger than 4x6 or studied prints with a
loupe so take this opinion for what it's worth.

Mike
