I have a Sigma 70-300 APO. I have several 11"x14" prints made from shots
with the Sigma -- even "zoomed out" to 300mm. Granted, they were "spot on"
in exposure, and perfectly focused, but they do look good on the wall! The
lens' imaging capability is really pretty good.

The macro facility is good (1:2 at 300mm, gives good subject-to-camera
relief distance), and works pretty well with a Nikon 5T or 6T diopter. (The
6T gives over 1:1 and it's still pretty sharp.).

I have three problems with the lens:

(1) It really is pretty slow (f/5.6 at 300). You really need to use ASA 400
film in the field, especially if you want to use a polarizing filter. I've
shot a lot with Reala (ASA 100) in order to allow getting good enlargements,
but this necessitates/guarantees tripod use.

(2) It has rather light construction, especially compared with a Nikkor. I
really try to "baby" it physically.

(3) The front element rotates in focusing .... ugh.
