Miguel,
I would say that for such subjects, you simply do not need AF at all. In
many cases, it would be more convenient and faster to just focus
manually. Ever tried to use AF on a tripod?!?
Personally, I only use AF for snapshots (often in conjunction with flash
and sometimes P mode), and I use MF for the rest, in A mode and using
the dof scale of my fixed focal lenses.
