I have one lens that takes a 77mm filter. Personally, I would rather not
stick a 77mm filter on a 52mm lens because 77mm filters seem, IMO really
huge, by comparison. If you will be using the 77mm most of the time and
the 52mm on rare occasion it might be the way to go, but try it before you
buy. I use one step up ring from 52mm to 55mm and I don't care much for
it, but it saves some $$. If you have a lens hood, UV protector, step-up
ring, and polarizing filter to juggle, you can wish you had 4 hands (or the
right size filter). If your 77mm is a wide angle (missed the original
post) some folks find a polarizer unsatisfactory because of variations in
the broad expanse of sky.

A quick check at B & H shows the 52-77 step up is $9.95 for generic and
$29.95 for Tiffen. If you went with Tiffen, you're a long way toward
getting a polarizer that fits the 52mm.

There are also those Cokin slide-in filters to consider, but I don't know
much about them.

Good luck in your decision.
