Your guess is right. I use a linear polariser too and it works quite ok
in AF with my fixed focal lenses and my F601 and F801s. I can guarantee
that AF does not work with a front-rotating zoom. This said, I usually
use my lenses in MF, expecially for lanscapes.
For what exposure concerns, it should be off by up to 1/3 to 1/2 stop,
at worse. As the polarisation darkens the sky and modifies the contrast
of the scene, it is quite difficult to judge the correct exposure, IMO.
